Cley is a small village and civil parish in the North Norfolk district of Norfolk, England. It lies on the North Sea coast, 6 miles (10 km) east of Holt and 8 miles (13 km) west of Cromer. Cley is a popular tourist destination, due to its beautiful setting and excellent views of the surrounding marshes and coastline.

The village has a long and rich history. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and its name is believed to be derived from the Old English ‘claeg', meaning a low-lying area of marshland. The village was once an important port, trading with the Netherlands and other European countries, and was also a major fishing port. In the 18th century it became a centre for smuggling, with many of its inhabitants engaging in the trade.

Today, Cley is a quiet, tranquil village, surrounded by the beautiful Norfolk countryside. It has a number of historic buildings, including the 14th century Church of St Margaret, which is said to be the oldest building in the village. There is also an old windmill, which dates back to the 17th century, and a number of thatched cottages.

The village is home to a number of independent shops, pubs and cafes, as well as a range of accommodation, from B&Bs to holiday cottages. There is also a modern art gallery, the Cley Marshes Nature Reserve, which is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers, and The Cley Smokehouse, which produces a range of smoked fish products.

Cley is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists, with a number of scenic walks and cycle routes in the surrounding area. The village is also part of the Norfolk Coast Path, which runs for over 60 miles (97 km) along the Norfolk Coast, from Hunstanton to Cromer.

Cley is well known for its birdlife, with the Cley Marshes Nature Reserve being a major bird-watching destination. The marshes are home to a variety of species, including marsh harriers, avocets, black-tailed godwits, redshanks and many more. The reserve also has a wide range of other wildlife, including hares, foxes, otters and deer.

Cley is a beautiful and peaceful village, with a rich and varied history. Its stunning scenery and range of activities make it a great destination for a relaxing break away.
